Frequently Asked Questions about Barcode Scanners

Which scanner is recommended for scanning bar codes?

We recommend the Zebra CS6080 scanner (previously it was the Motorola/Symbol CS3070), which is a bluetooth, laser scanner.

You should not get the 3000 model, as it is ONLY a batch scanner, and does not work to instantly send data to the phone/tablet.

My bluetooth barcode scanner isn't working. What can I do?

Bluetooth sometimes has a shorter range than people expect (generally about 1 meter). Making things worse, if you go out of range, and then back into range, it can show that it still has a bluetooth connection when it does not and thus, the bluetooth connection has to be reestablished.

We recommend keeping your scanner within a few feet of your phone/tablet.

Is there a phone app that can replace a barcode scanner?

Not that we're aware of. If you find one that works well, let us know.

The reason why the phone isn’t used to scan is that or would take too long, as phones only have picture taking capability, which would have to be translated into a barcode. A process that takes several seconds, which is impractical when you could be scanning many containers.

Many people use a “sled scanner”, which is a phone case with a built in scanner (such as FedEx and UPS, and the Apple stores). Contact your scanner distributor for more information.

I'm fed up with bluetooth. Is there a corded option that will work with my phone/tablet?

We are not aware of such a device, but they may exist. If you find such a device that works and isn't crazy expensive, let us know.

My barcode scanner does not add a carriage return to the input. How do I fix this?

While most scanners will include a carriage return suffix by default, some do not. Our website expects the carriage return suffix to be included. The process to add the suffix is scanning a set of configuration barcodes in order. These barcodes will be in your user manual for your scanner. If you don't have the manual, it is typically available from the manufacturer's website. If you use a digital copy of the manual, you may need to print out the page with the barcodes as some scanners are unable to scan a barcode on a computer or phone screen.
